Whale Parts
Since it is often the only thing visible, dorsal fins are a key to identification of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the wild. This illustration shows the three basic types: falcate, triangular, and rounded. In the following diagrams, a humpback whale represents a typical baleen whale, and a bottlenose dolphin represents the toothed whales.
Both the baleen whale and toothed whale diagrams may be enlarged - the enlargements appear in their own new windows and are from 60k - 80k in size. IE users need to click on a named part. Netscape & Opera users may click anywhere on either diagram. FACT PACK PAGES MAY BE REPRINTED FOR EDUCATIONAL OR SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES |
