diagram of dorsal fin types
dorsal fin types

Since it is often the only thing visible, dorsal fins are a key to identification of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the wild. This illustration shows the three basic types: falcate, triangular, and rounded.

In the following diagrams, a humpback whale represents a typical baleen whale, and a bottlenose dolphin represents the toothed whales.
