| American Cetacean Society Culture of Whales - Oct. 2002 Speakers |
The following is an excerpt from the October 2002 conference program
WILL ANDERSON Will Anderson initiated his nonprofit career when he founded Greenpeace Alaska in the late '70's. He did this by first selling merchandise out of the back of his car to establish an office in Anchorage. Later he was then appointed to the national board of directors. After several years and campaigns at Greenpeace, Will entered the private sector in the 1980's and founded a small chain of gift stores called Ecology House. During that time, he also co-founded the Main Animal Coalition in Portland, Maine. In the 1990's, Will worked as a campaign coordinator at the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Lynnwood, Washington for seven years. For the past year and a half, Will has worked for the Earth Island Institute and is responsible for the Orca Recovery Campaign in the Puget Sound region. In the past three decades Will has covered a wide array of subject matter and methodologies to create change in environmental and animal welfare issues. They include lobbying, researching, media writing and investigating subject areas as diverse as offshore oil and gas, whales and whaling, cruelty to animals, and the role of diet in human ecology. He currently subsidizes his income as a real estate agent, and for thirty years remains a vegetarian/vegan. Will is a panelist in the discussion on 'Career Opportunities in Cetacean Research & Conservation'. |
