ACS Membership - Join ACSIf you haven't joined us yet - please do. Your tax-deductible contribution of $25 or $35 (or more) goes a long way towards protecting the future of whales, dolphins, porpoises, and their environment. While it isn't really scientifically accurate to portray cetaceans as the "canaries of the sea," the analogy is quite apt on a practical level. By protecting cetaceans from human-created hazards such as gill-net fishing or noise pollution, we also protect the web of life that shares the marine environment. The pelagic birds. The seals and otters. The starfish and tiny shrimps, and also the people. We, collectively, have historically hunted whales to the point of extinction. We owe it to them, and to our children, to do what we can to ensure their future. ACS's mission is to do this primarily via education. "In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught." Baba Dioum, Senegalese ecologist We need your help to continue to offer our free educational programs - our membership provides the core support for our programs. Please join us as a member and help ACS protect whales, dolphins and porpoises by building bridges between scientists, people and policy. For an individual membership fee of $35 (there are also discounted student, teacher, & senior memberships), you will be actively supporting an organization that seeks to educate the public and influence world opinion. These annual membership fees are very modest but go a long way towards funding our educational programs. To join ACS, (or to renew your membership) simply select your level, a chapter affiliation, and click on a "Join/Renew Now" button to join immediately with a credit card, or print and mail the membership form with your check or credit card information. The primary benefit of membership is the satisfaction of helping save these highly social and intelligent creatures. Secondary benefits are receipt of a periodic publication, Whalewatcher, and discounts on ACS sponsored trips and merchandise. You have the option of being a member-at-large or joining the ACS chapter of your choice. If you join one of the chapters there are additional benefits such as their monthly newsletter. Unlike some groups, attendance at the monthly chapter meetings is entirely optional but you will always want to attend as they are interesting. You can join any chapter you wish, regardless of your location. You do not need to live near a chapter to affiliate with it, even if you do live near a different chapter. All ACS members are welcome at chapter activities. The monthly chapter meetings feature renowned naturalists and are open to the public, so if you want to get to know us before you join, you have that option. It costs nothing to belong to our extended family of ACS Friends - the people and organizations who help ACS protect whales, dolphins and porpoises in ways that do not necessarily involve membership or financial contributions. We almost always need assistance with our educational activities (see the volunteer page) and in-kind donations. We appreciate whatever support you can give us. We hope that friends and members communicate with their elected representatives to urge that they support legislation which protects cetaceans and their environment. Whales and dolphins need clean water and a pollution-free environment. Please support local, state, and federal legislation that promotes the cleanup of pollution sources. |
